My Personal Introduction to Climbing

What you need to Know

Welcome to the sport of Climbing! Either doing it outdoors on rocks or climbing indoor walls, this sport has caught my attention bigtime! Well, talking about it’s history and technicalities will definitely be a long story and maybe I’ll talk about it in a different time; so let’s start this by writing where it all started – in the walls of Basekamp MarketMarket.

Many of us maybe intimidated with how we climb walls and how technical it would be by just looking at some guys with carabiners, ropes, rock shoes, chalk bags, and harnesses – BUT don’t be!

Being a beginner, you actually won’t be worrying too much on gears. Just get down to business and climb. The best thing I experienced on my first climb here is the motivation others give you! They coach your moves, they give you advice, they encourage you to finish no matter how difficult your fingers feel. It’s like they climb with you all the way! Basekamp MarketMarket’s wall stands around 42ft and features lots of holds and multiple levels and routes which fit anybody’s current physical level. So beginning climbing is actually the easiest part.

How to Get Here

Well the easiest way to guide you there is clicking the map here. It could be found on the top floor of Market Market Mall, located at Taguig Metro Manila and is just a close walk from Bonifacio High Street.

The Budget

Just to give an insight, rates on Basekamp Market Market are the cheapest among climbing gyms I’ve been in the Metro. It’s really a bargain and it’s really a great workout for those who aren’t into gyms.

  • 50php per climb
    • This includes a belayer as well.
    • You could fall as many times as you want until you reach the top or give up so it’s really no pressure.
  • 140php climb w/o belayer.
    • Since this option has no belayer, you either need someone you know to belay for you; or you could do some bouldering – in which no ropes are needed.
  • 340php unlimited climb w/ belayer
    • This is a great option especially if you’re alone. You get to have a personal belayer for you the whole day and test any route you want. Nearly half the price of other big climb gyms I know!

The Gears

If you’re still a beginner, then you won’t worry too much about this. They’ll provide you with harnesses and chalk bags here as well. You could wear any type of rubber shoes too since you won’t be stepping on tiny holds as a beginner anyway.

When you develop progress in climbing and want to mix it in your hobbies, you may want to invest in rock shoes. You could purchase them online or on outdoor stores too. Be sure to read the basics in purchasing these shoes online as well. I’m no expert so I’ll leave that to you guys.

And if you’re really into this sport and want to get outdoors too, it’s best to know the guys here since they do it often. Invest in your personal harness and climb chalks as well. Ropes will come along with your buddies here. Just remember, when you’re in a pinch – climbers are the best buddies to hang into! (No pun intended haha!)

What’s Next?

Many of you might be wondering, what’s next after you climbed that wall? Well to sum it up, there’s so MUCH MORE! You haven’t even scratched the surface!

Let’s exclude outdoor climbing for now since it’s another topic of discussion and has a more diverse and uncontrolled atmosphere than climbing indoors. When you reach a level of comfort in your climbing and find simply going over the top too easy, you could try out higher graded routes; and when I say routes – those are the tagged holds (colored tapes) in which those will be the only holds you could step or hold onto. Routes set on Basekamp Market Market range from an easy 5a to a dangerous 7a+ (well they could set up new ones any time). And even after that, there will be so much more in store for you! There are actually three basic (there may be more) categories in climbing which will be introduced below. I’ll probably do a long discussion of each one but that could wait for another time.

Top Rope

This is probably the most basic type in which a climber is attached to a rope and looped on an anchor system above and the other end held by the belayer. The goal is to simply….you got it right, get to the top!

Lead Climb

Lead climbing is an advanced level type of climbing in which the climber does not have any anchor on the top. You actually will have to secure yourself as you go up the route via clips of carabiners to certain clip points. This is far more dangerous since a wrong clip (back clip) would cause you injury or probably death (not scaring you though.lol).

Bouldering

Bouldering requires you no ropes at all. And now when you think it’s easy, this is arguably the most difficult. Most climbers actually call it a boulder problem and requires powerful movements and efficient techniques to solve each one. This trains your power and technique but of course this is variable depending on your program. I’m new to climbing anyway so why take me seriously? Hahaha!

Sometimes, it isn’t Power…

Strength is measured

with Determination

There’s more to you than you know.

Live up to yourself and try harder…

There’s no better motivation than the will to exceed the current you.
